2nd XI 1-1 Motueka 1st XI

Location: Tahunanui S3

Goals: Danny

Match MVP: Joseph

Tahuna S3 was the chosen home ground to meet the yellow foe after the 2-1 Mot game hosted under lights where balls owned by Motueka FC mysteriously disappeared and magically re-appeared on the match video recording escaping in a Tahuna kit bag.

A rousing pre match rark up by captain Ross had the blood boiling at kick off - and the lads knew this was the game to win.

Seth made an impression in the first 5 putting pressure on the Motueka defence from the back before top goal scorer Will got taken out in front of the sticks. Penalty placed low and left of the keeper by D Hampton put us in a great position to settle into our game. 1-0 out of half time and we expected Motueka to come in hot for the comeback - and hot they did come with their sideline, they got stuck in at least verbally - at the ref and with every dive possible.

They got their own back with an unlucky handball in the box late in the half and drew 1-1 on penalties.

The boys in blue stayed positive and kept hammering, it was delightful to see and to come away with a draw showed a lot of devastated faces at the final whistle.

MVP - Joe Walton tireless in the midfield and always keeping a great delivery in every direction.

Well done

We are still in this boys so re-gather, get to training and let’s get it done in the last 3 games.

3rd XI 4-1 Richmond FC Bogans

Location: Jubilee Park S2 Goals: Stuart, Sayha 3.

Match MVP: Quan After the "Amnesia tour" kicked off with a win away against Mapua. The 3rds found themselves on the road again this time into severely hostile territory at Jubilee Park S2 with a match up against Bogans, who were looking to emulate the Stags and get one over on the 3rds.....

Tahuna set up in their favourite 4-4-2 diamond formation, with Sobi returning into the midfield after a week off. Quan, Dong and Diego making up the rest of the midfield. Stefano returned to the backline alongside the ever present Fraser, Matty and Eric. On the bench Tahuna boasted 4 subs!!!!! Something that hadn't happened for an age.

1st half:

The game kicked off and straight away Tahuna looked the calmer of the 2 teams with smart passing in the middle of the park. Bogans boasting the height and physicality of the 2 teams. It didn't take long for Tahuna to take the lead as some neat passing by Quan released Sayha into the box, and put it away with a lovely finish to go 1-0 up with 10mins on the clock.

Bogans however picked themselves up and drew level 5mins later after some sleepiness in the midfield and defence allowed a cheeky finish for the homeside.

Undeterred Tahuna picked themselves up and went straight back at Bogans. Diego, Binh and Sayha liking well and testing the bOgans keeper multiple times. Tahuna then made their first sub and it was a straight italian swap as Giambi making his first start since coming back from holiday in Italy came on for Stefano. Tahuna had the majority of the possession during the half and they were rewarded after Quan sent Sobi on a bombing run through the middle of the park to unleash Sayha to grab his 2nd of the game.

A couple of rash challenges from Bogans players saw the first of many yellows to be brandished.

2-1 as the mins ticked down to the end of the half. A couple more subs made as Stu and Rhys came on for Dong and Matt respectively. Tahuna could have made it a 3rd as Diego sent in a corner, the ball falling to Matty who against his better judgement decided not to boot the Bogans player in the face as he made the clearance.

A couple of rash challenges from Bogans players saw the first of many yellows to be brandished. With Sobi coming off for Will.

Half time and Tahuna 2-1 up as the lads came off for mid level banter as to whether Sobi would get sent off this week.

2nd half:

Some more changes as the FBI (Full blooded italians) swapped around with Stefano on for Giambi as well as Stu and Dong swapping. Bogans kicked off and tried looking for a way to get the equaliser. Tom making some solid saves. Quan who had been a menace throughout the game already was pinging inch perfect passes all over the place causing bogans a massive headache, they literally couldn't touch him! Sobi then came back on to terrorise the Bogans midfield and was rewarded with a yellow when after a rash challenge from a Bogans player he decided to dive onto the ball, old habits die hard aye Sobi.

Tahuna again went on the attack, trying to find a way to finish the game off. With about 25mins to go they did just that as Sayha broke through after a brilliant pass from Binh squeezed it under the keeper to give Tahuna their 3rd goal and to complete his hat trick! Some more substitutions from Tahuna saw Stu, Matty and Rhys back on. Bogans looked defeated but occasionally tried testing the Tahuna backline with a long ball, which was easily snuffed out by the lads. Then something very strange happened...

Fraser flicked the ball up to Binh, who then set Sayha on his way, a cheeky timed cross running from Stu left space in the middle, Sayha seeing the run passed in between 2 Bogans defenders, straight into the path of Stu who unbelievably performed a left footed toe punt under the keeper and managed to get the ball in the back of the net!! 4-1 to Tahuna and somewhere back in Tahuna Colin Chapman got a shiver up his spine....

A flurry of subs from Tahuna (got 4 players on the bench might as well make the most of it), to bring the game home as the ref blew for full time.

Tahuna 3rds 4 Richmond Bogans 1 as the "Amnesia Tour" continues. Next up for Tahuna is a "home game" at Saxton Fields as the lads take on Motueka in what is sure to be a great game. Expect cards and scores to settled. 5 points clear at the top with 2 games to go....

UP THE MIGHTY HUNA!!!!!!

4th XI 2-5

Location: Saxton Field

Goals: Keris, Ethan.

Match MVP: Brad Down at Saxtons on one of the pitches that was spared from tyre damage the 4ths came up against 2nd on the table in their favorite pink kit and brought another outstanding performance which is not reflected in the final score.

At the start of the first half Tahuna came out strong with a frankly impressive missed opportunity from Zach but the continued pressure on the suburbs backline forced an error which allowed Keris to get through on goal and open the scoring. Tahuna continued the press and only 5 minutes later Ethan slotted another one into the back of the net to bring us 2-0 up. The rest of the half saw both teams attacking and defending with one of the suburbs players earning himself a yellow card for a late challenge on Jonny.

The second half Suburbs came back out in force and managed to sneak 3 goals past Luke early in the second half. Tahuna continued to challenge suburbs but were unable to get their opportunities into the back of the net. With 2 players coming off injured the 4ths started to get tired and the younger, fitter suburbs side capitalised on this and managed to get themselves two more goals before the end of the game.

MOTM went to Brad for his calm and collected presence in the backline stopping many of Suburbs attacks before they could become a threat.

TFC Masters 3-3

Location: Tahunanui S2

Goals: Cole, Paddy, Gwynaldinho

Match MVP: Gwynaldinho

We arrived at the S2 Tahuna football grounds this weekend to find the Dirtbike Chavs Association had kindly marked out a swerving skid route through our football pitch. Kev commanded a soft march along the curved brown lines. The sight of the tippy toeing blue and white army must have been quite a thing to behold. Some dude even climbed on top of the container changing sheds for a better view or perhaps he was inspecting our outside toilets?! Kev wanted a polished field and he expected a shiny performance this week. “Ya know the danger man, I want 1 of you close on him and another dropping back ready to pick him up as he comes through.”

All revved up and surely ready to go. But when the whistle blew we decided to play a game of musical statues and Suburbs FC passed through our team like we were an early entry to the Prostrate Walking Football Cup. After the restart we woke up to the fact that we had to press when they had the ball and that passes and runs were the way forward. Paddy made some dashing raids. He swept the ball across the pitch to me at one point. I hit the ball low but on the wrong side of the post. We all kept pushing, winning corners and dominating possession in the Suburbs FC half. Paddy, Gaz, Kev, Ed, Macca, Cole and myself all tried our best to break through. I finally feinted my way into the box only to get clattered. The referee took his time but blew his whistle as I stood on the field swearing at my sore knees. Kev picked up the ball, placed it on the penalty spot and struck it… Only for their 7-foot-tall keeper to smother the shot and upset Kev’s mood further. We staggered up the field again insisting on an equaliser. When it came it was a thing of beauty. Gwynaldinho arrived. He dribbled and shifted like Neo from the Matrix, his feet seemingly working on a ramped-up version of time. A forceful smash shot was unleashed to finally beat their springy keeper. Just like buses a second goal arrived shortly after. Ed went on his assist campaign again, doing most of the work on the left, squaring it to me. I volleyed the ball into the box and Cole popped up from nowhere to spank it into their net.

Unfortunately, in the second half we forgot our lines and the FC United danger striker lived up to his name. Gaz had dropped back to deal with him, but he caught a spare yard outside our box to pelt in a decent long-range blast, 2-2. Suburbs FC came on heavy at this point, but we wrestled back control threatening transition breaks every 3 or 4 minutes. When Paddy grappled his way into United’s box, he still had a straggler defender, stuck to him like an elevator fart. A quick nudge of that distraction created clean space, and Paddy did what Paddy usually does, slot it in the net. We could have easily made it 4 with any of our promising roves into the final third. I probably had the easiest chance to stretch our lead. Only a few metres out from goal I hit the ball over their ground stretched keeper only to watch him pull out a Matrix response save… I really need a goal soon! FC United knew they were running out of time so started threatening our goal with increasing desperation. Ollie pulled out a few great saves and Campbell was a man-machine, terminating attack and runs with the cold-eyed stare of a warrior. However, pressure usually tells. Their star striker was given the chance to take a free kick at the very edge of our box. When the time actually came to wisely play musical statues our defensive wall fluttered and a shot that should have bounced off our wall somehow sneaked its way through with an ugly deflection too, resulting in an unsavable equaliser.

We pushed again for a winner but ultimately, we were all relieved not to completely self-combust and lose the game at the death. We played some attractive football but came up even stevens. Given the size of FC United’s bench, we should take some pride in this. Are we ready for the top of the table Suburbs team? We really need to bring our best next time around.
