Football is fun.
Tahuna FC 2nds came away with a great win today, especially considering we only had 8 players with 5 minutes until kickoff. Lucky for us, our young guns decided not to stay for a pie in Wakefield and arrived in the nick of time.
The game started much better than I expected, with Arjun finding the back of the net early for his first of 4 goals for the day. Our 3 gold card holders Pedro, Ross and Dan held down the back line like a campaign for cheaper bus fares.
Joseph kicked the ball really far backwards onetime, along with a few legs. Jamie Floyd broke away from his bearings and performed a full hamster hoooyaaa spin in his ball. Paul chased absolutely everything and even managed to sneak himself a goal.
Halftime was something like 4 nil, but honestly I can’t remember. I was far too busy strategising and soaking in the glory. Second half A few changes were made, with Pedro moving up top. He did manage to get himself a goal, but also decided to have a “run” at the keeper, chipping him beautifully before somehow chipping the entire goal as well.
Ross continued his ongoing battle with being in the wrong place at the wrong time whenever a goal was available. Richmond managed to sneak one back, but by then the lead was already far too great and Tahuna were absolutely flying.

3rd XI 1 - 3 Locomotive
Location: Guppy Park Goals: Jed
Match MVP: Fraser Buoyed by their encouraging performance against Karenni the previous week, Tahuna travelled to Guppy Park for a clash with FC Locomotive.
With a full bench available for the first time this season, Tahuna started brightly and looked determined to get a result. Some tidy passing between Jed, Wayne and Sobi created an early opening for Sayha, but Locomotive struck first when a curling effort found its way past the returning Tom Dunn.
Tahuna responded positively and created several opportunities. Stu went close after a lovely pass from Sayha, while Sayha also had a chance to level the scores. It was an evenly contested first half, with both teams enjoying promising moments before the break.
After some positive words at halftime, Tahuna came back out ready to work their way into the game. Unfortunately, it was Locomotive who struck again to make it 2–0.
Tahuna refused to let their heads drop and immediately pushed forward with renewed energy. Rhys Black won the ball and found Sobi, who flicked it on to Stu. His pass reached the onrushing Jed, who calmly finished to bring Tahuna back into the match.
However, Locomotive responded almost immediately, restoring their two-goal advantage at 3–1.
Tahuna’s midfield continued working hard to create opportunities, with Thorsten, Ryan, Sobi and Pan doing everything they could to bring Sayha and Binh into the game. Sayha had two excellent chances in quick succession, but both went agonisingly wide.
Tom Dunn then produced an excellent save at a crucial moment to keep Tahuna in the contest, much to the delight of the bench and travelling supporters. It seems that time with the First XI has paid dividends.
Tahuna made another flurry of substitutions and switched to three at the back as they went in search of a way back into the match. The passing was excellent, and Tahuna spent much of the closing period camped inside the Locomotive half.
Binh came closest to producing a memorable finish with a brilliant free kick from the edge of the area. The goalkeeper was beaten, but the ball crashed against the crossbar and went out for a goal kick.
That was that. Tahuna were beaten on the day, but there were plenty of encouraging signs in another competitive performance.
Next up for the Thirds is a date with destiny as they take on the mighty, and youthful, Tahuna Seconds at Tahuna S2 this coming Saturday.

TFC Womens XI 1 - 0 Nelson Suburbs
Location: Tahunanui S2
Goals:
Match MVP: Taylah A tough and physical game saw Suburbs come away with a 1–0 win over Tahuna on the weekend but it didn’t come easy for them. Tahuna put in a fantastic effort, defending vigorously and battling hard throughout the match.
Despite the rough nature of the game and a few injuries along the way, the team showed great determination, resilience and fight right until the final whistle blew. A great effort from our ladies and a result everyone was proud to have against such a strong team.
Man of the match went to our goal keeper Taylah, her skills were put to the test on Saturday and she had some amazing saves. An overall great effort from our team. Rest up ladies you all deserve it

TFC Masters 0 - 3 Nelson Suburbs

The suburbs bus arrived at Tahuna train station pitch, well stocked with the well drilled dark blue champions. Tahuna on the other hand could only just field a team. 11 players plus one on the bench. We could have brought in other Tahuna players but they were all cup tied after playing in some other cup? That didn’t really make sense to us?! Either way, we were short of class in midfield with Paddy trekking across the south island for a dog, Ed doing push ups in Bali and Tomas wrapping himself up in bubble wrap for his big overseas trip. Gwyn was left to fill in on left wing, I was on the right and Cunny left aiming to do a Trent Alexander Arnold at left back.
There was pressure on Diego to sneak through the suburbs line. He went hard early, but it was all too much, and his quad gave way within 15 minutes. There went our final substitution! We dug in like an Alabama tick. It was hard to get past the halfway line, but every defender stepped up with blocks, sliding tackles and off ball pressing which kept the suburbs on their toes.
Zane was thriving in his new defensive midfielder role, shuffling from one to the next, a true South African springbok. We managed to edge it up the field for a couple of set plays, but chances were meagre and a looping shot from afar by Gaz was about as close as we went.
Unfortunately, the suburbs pressure eventually told. Cunny tracked deep into our own box. He saw their striker running towards him, laid down a human wall and the forward positively leapt over him onto the ground for a penalty shout. That was calmly dispatched and suburbs pushed forward smelling a second. A soft free kick was awarded at the corner of our box, hit a Suburbs striker’s head and was misdirected from our goalie’s hands by Cunny, again, (our man of the match) into the goal to make it 0-2 Suburbs.
We needed to get forward and take control of midfield. So, Cam looked to Zane who said, “if you see me and I’m free don’t pass the ball to me!” That’s the spirit! Kev tried to rally the team at half time. We certainly gave a bit of bite.
Sammi was the centre of controversy when a clash escalated into a melee. Sammi was sent off the pitch to calm down. Cunny, Macca and Kev tried some enterprising runs but never got as far as a decent shot on goal.
Suburbs took advantage by overloading our left side and passing triangles between midfield, defender and keeper to stroke it into our net, 0-3 Suburbs. Surely the game was done by now and we could all calm down? Or maybe not… On one venture forward a suburbs’ striker accidentally tried to kick the ball out of Ollie’s hands. He’s left worried now whether swollen parts will function like they need to… And a mistimed challenge by me was met with the reply of a football boot to the face. The suburbs chap apologised saying he was kicking out in the air, not intentionally aiming for face. But it was a crazy thing seeing a set of studs launching into your eyes. So, he was rightly sent off and was quick to repay his debt with an appreciated beer at the end of the game.
Taylah was concerned about the blood coming off my face so grabbed my attention and used a paint stripping water blaster to remove a red smear. It lightened the mood and meant I could skip the post-match shower when this bruising encounter finally finished. Match Report by Pete B
