Division 3: Sprig + Fern Tahuna 3rd XI Division 4:

Women's Premiership: Sprig + Fern Tahuna Breakers Masters Football: Sprig + Fern Tahuna Masters

1st XI 1-3 FC Nelson Karenni

Location: Tahunanui S1

Goals: Mackenzie

Match MVP: Mackenzie As always, the lads went into the long weekend cup fixture depleted. The long weekend bringing with it, its curse of luring key players away and forcing Tahuna to make changes to the team that picked a point up against Richmond last time out.

Aptly timed, though, was the return of long serving club captain, Josh, who hasn’t kicked a ball in anger since pre season when injuring an ankle in a friendly.

Without 6 first teamers, it was perhaps unsurprising that the home team started slowly. Karenni settled in to their game quickly, shifting the ball well and looking to spring in behind. The boys at the beach were lucky not to give away a penalty after 3 minutes, when stand-in goalkeeper, Cam clattered into an on-rushing attacker as he raced out to close down a 1-on-1. The referee deeming it a “natural collision” and play continued, the goalbound effort cleared as it bounced toward the net and Tahuna breaking forward down the right. A nice interchange between Macca, Rossy and Danny lead to the latter receiving a cross, volleying goalward only for the sprawling visiting goalkeeper to claw the ball out for a corner.

The next 10 minutes saw the game spiral quickly away from the lads, 3 goals from long balls over the top, leaving Cam stranded and the game slipping away. In this period, the boys from the beach also lost Heyds to a hamstring injury, forcing further patching up of the side.

With half an hour gone, the score was 3-0, and the boys finally settled and found a rhythm. Keeping the ball well, forcing the Karenni backline to retreat and applying long periods of pressure. The in form, on fire GOAT, Macca, got the boys back into it just before half time, firing a left footed effort into the roof of the net after a sustained period of pressure and multiple blocked shots.

3-1 at HT.

Ultimately, the scoreline remained unchanged after the break, despite a mass of pressure from the home side, a barrage of shots, penalty shouts and set pieces. The Karenni defence stood firm to take them through to the semi-finals of the cup.

An eventful second period for multiple reasons, but highlighted by a brilliant 1-on-1 save by Cam to keep the lads in it as the clock ticked away.

Possibly the teams best performance of the season, after the concession of the 3rd goal, but punished for a sluggish start. MOTM - Macca for another goal, solid performance and relentless effort to get the lads back in the game.

The boys travel to Motueka on Tuesday night looking to secure three points in a HUGE league fixture.  Match Report by Matt Jepson.

2nd XI 1-3 FC Nelson Locomotive

Location: Tahunanui S2

Goals: Raimund

Match MVP: Raimund

Tahuna 2nds exited the cup after a 3-1 defeat to FC Nelson Locomotive in what was a typically hard-fought encounter between these two sides.

Tahuna started brightly, creating a few dangerous moments early on. Austen went close with a header that whistled over the bar from Geeza's neat cross. Raimund then put Tahuna ahead with a low shot across goal into the far corner.

However, Loco responded well and continued to threaten down their left. Their striker forced Will into a smart double save from a one-on-one chance. Tahuna didn't stay ahead for long as the referee controversially awarded Locomotive an extremely soft penalty when Ross was adjudged to have fouled their player in the box while contesting a throw-in. The penalty was converted to level the scores.

A deflated Tahuna struggled to retain possession after that setback, and Loco took advantage to go 2-1 up before halftime. Their winger whipped in a brilliant cross for the striker to head home unmarked.

The second half was a struggle for Tahuna who seemed to be second to every ball. When they did have the ball, they were unable to make it stick and tended to give it away cheaply, with loose control and misplaced passes. Loco extended their lead with 20 minutes left as their striker latched onto a through ball and dinked it past the onrushing Will despite Ross' efforts on the line.

The 3-1 scoreline saw Tahuna 2nds exit the cup. Man of the match was Raimund for his goal and efforts up front. Petchy, Will and Austen also received honourable mentions. Match report by Will Murphy.

3rd XI 2-3 Richmond FC Thistle

Location: Tahunanui S1

Goals: Sobi, Diego

Match MVP: Welcome to Tahuna 3rds vs Richmond Thistle from KFC Park (Tahuna S1)

Its a wonderful day here as we get ready for the kick off with Tahuna in their home Blue and White and Richmond in their Red and Black.

Richmond win the toss and elect to kick off. Tahuna are lining up in a 4-3-3 formation this week while Richmond are sticking with their 5 at the back to start. The last 2 games between the two have ended in draws. Richmond try to work the ball through the centre but Sobi cuts it out. He passes out to Sayha on the left wing and he gets past the Richmond RB and takes a shot. It drifts across the mouth the of goal and out for a goalkick. Richmond take the goal kick and it floats into the Tahuna half. Its headed onto the Richmond ST but hes dispossessed by Kez Peters at CB. He passes to Angus Mill who passes out to Stu Mountain at LB, he passes onto Han and the ball gets out to Luca at RW. Luca cuts inside and feeds to Diego who unleashes a shot and is saved by the Richmond keeper again.

Both teams not giving an inch in this first 15 mins. Tahuna dominating possession in the midfield and some beautiful 2 touch football sees them having the majority of shots. Richmond manage to feed the ball down the left and then try to chip it over to the ST. Kez is running alongside and aims to clear it but his misskicks the ball and Richmond have a straight run on goal. Tom comes out of goal to close the gap but the Richmond striker places it down to Tom's right.

Richmond 1 Tahuna 0.

Tahuna take the kick off and immediately some beautiful passing opens up space for a shot. The Richmond keeper makes a good save again for a corner. Diego whips the ball in and the Richmond defense send it out again for a corner. Again Diego whips one in and Blessings manages to get a head on it but it goes out for a goalkick.

Some changes for Tahuna now as Stu and Matt give way to Josh Hindrup and Michel Delgado. Tahuna now work the ball down the right flank with Michel whipping in an awesome cross, the ball gets headed out as far as Sobi, he takes a look up and lets fly from 30 yards out.....

GGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a strike from Sobi!! Keeper had no chance there and the crowd goes wild.

Richmond takes the kickoff and immediately tries a long ball but Angus clears it up to Han who passes to Binh. Binh takes a man on and releases Diego, he rounds one player and looks to have lost the ball but continues on chasing the keeper goes to grab it but Diego gets a touch away from the keepers hands and buries it into the goal!!!!

Tahuna 2 Richmond 1!!

2 quick goals and Richmond look deflated as they take the kick off. They try again to chip it over the Tahuna backline and manage to get the better of Kez and Angus but Tom Dunn is there to clear it up. Tom lets rip and the ball flies high into the Richmond half. Its headed clear by the Richmond midfield and the break is on. Michel comes in with an awesome tackle but the ref sees it as a foul. Richmond take the freekick and the ball sails in as Tom calls for it. The ball lands right in front of him and bounces off his hands! Richmond are first to it and bury the ball into the net!!

Tahuna 2 Richmond 2

Tahuna take the kickoff and again go on the attack. Sayha lets fly but again narrowly misses as the keeper sends it out for a corner. Diego takes the corner and the ball falls beautifully into the box right onto Kez's head.....

JUST OVER!!!! The big dutchman can't believe it! Inches over the bar!!

Richmond take the goal kick as the ref blows for halftime. What an awesome first half we have had here at KFC Park, proper end to end stuff as the ref looks knackered from going back and forth.

The teams line up for the second half of this rip roaring game.

Some subs at halftime for both teams as Han comes with an injury and Ralph comes on for his first game in 5 weeks.

Tahuna take the kick and again the sumptuous 2 touch passing game of Tahuna goes through the Richmond team like a knife through butter. Multiple shots are had by Tahuna in the first 25mins of this half as Tahuna camp themselves in the Richmond half with the occasional breakaway by Richmond but the strikers are not on their game today for the away side as they miss kick or send the ball wide on the occasions. Some naughty tackles start going in from Tahuna and the ref stops the game briefly for Diego to have a quick team talk with the lads about going in too heavy. Surprisingly no cards have been shown to either side. A couple more changes now as Stu comes on into CDM for a knackered Ralph who really has put in some yards in this short spell. Richmond take a throw in down the left and attempt to chip it over the Tahuna backline but Stu is there to clear it out for a corner. The corner is floated in by Richmond but Tom gets his hands to it and Tahuna break down the right with Michel, Pedro and Sobi linking well. They release Blessings who cuts inside and lets fly but unfortunately Richmond hammer it out for a corner. Pedro whips the ball in short to Binh who turns and sees Stu on the edge of the box. He lays it up as Stu hits it. It floats narrowly over the bar as groans echo out from the home support. Tahuna bring Matt on for Josh who looks gassed. Richmond again try attacking and get the better of the Tahuna defense, the striker is in on goal as Tom closes the gap. The Richmond ST lets fly but sends it wide!! Tahuna enquire with the ref how much longer till extra time, 5mins.....

Tahuna again try to get that all important goal as Pedro dances through 3 challenges and lays it off for Blessings, Blessings makes his run ever so slightly too early as the pass comes behind him and out for a goalkick.

Richmond take the kick as the clock ticks down. They break down the right and with some neat passing manage to squeeze the ball through the Tahuna defense. Kez tries to chase the striker down as Tom comes out to close the gap....

The striker squeezes it past Tom on his left side and the ball rolls into the net.

Tahuna 2 Richmond 3.

The kick off is taken as Tahuna try desperately to get the equalizer and send this game into extra time. The pass is floated into the Richmond box but its too little too late as the ref blows for full time.

What an incredible game from both sides as both teams and coaches congratulate each other. It really was a tight game but Tahuna will definitely have their heads high knowing how well the whole team played today.

Next up for the boys in blue is a visit of FC Nelson Loco Steamers. Last time these two met the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Somehow with the way Tahuna played today I don't think a draw will be on the cards.

Match report to come.

TFC Breakers 1-2 Mapua Cougars

Location: Saxton Field S2

Goals: Hannah

Match MVP: Hannah & Miho

As the weather closed in on our game for the first day of Winter, we took the field and elected to play into the wind for the first half. Predicting we would get the benefit of the wind increasing during the day and the rain would settle in the late afternoon.

Mapua had a different team from what we encountered in our Nelson Pine competition, they were younger and faster than we remember.

With Arin away for the weekend Miho took on the goalie duties and was tested from the start with many attempts at goal from the 4 strikers in the Mapua team.

Mapua took the lead with a goal in the first 5 mins, after strong defending from our backs. Hannah took command of the defence and ensured our line held strong in the physical challenges by Mapua. In the 20th min, Hannah was rewarded with a penalty 5 yards outside the 18-yard box, a powerful kick saw the ball sail past the keepers head and ended up in the back of the net.

Mapua came back with a second goal to finish the first half of the game.

With the wind behind our backs, the temperature dropping and the feel of rain in the air, we started the second half with the same energy as the first.

The game went back and forth with both sides having attempts at increasing their score lines, the game was riddled with strong physical encounters and positive plays to give the spectators a good game to watch. Neither side was able to increase their scores in the second half resulting in a 2-1 finish.

With multiple saves from Miho in the goal and Hannah defending and controlling the back line the coach made the executive decision to award them both MVP for the day. Match report by Cris Phelan.
