2nd XI 5-1 FC Nelson 2nd XI

Location: Neale Park S2

Goals: Asher 2, Raimund, Will Mathews, Pedro

Match MVP: Pedro

This week the boys needed a result after a couple of tough defeats on the bounce.

Fortunately, we were on to a good one right from the start.

Pedro setting the tone early with his pace up front, dancing around a couple of defenders for the opening goal inside 2 minutes and we were away. The whole team worked hard and played well to create plenty of chances, Ash calmly slotted one through the keepers legs and Will Mathews getting on the score sheet should have killed the game.

The last 15min of the first half got a bit loose and FC made the most of it to get one back before half time.

Nobody wanted a clean sheet anyway.

The 2nd half was more controlled and saw plenty of chances created. The FC Nelson fullbacks were in for a long day with Dan Smith, Blessings and Will Mathews all enjoying some space out wide and making the most of it.

Ash was on hand once again with a good finish for his second and Raimund got himself one to see out the game. Could have been more but we leave happy after a good day from all.

Back to Neale Park again next week for Loco.

3rd XI 3-1 Mapua

Location: Tahunanui S1 Goals: Diego, Quan, Ralph

Match MVP: Fraser Sunny skies and the smell of KFC lingering in the air. Must be a Tahuna home game.

The 3rds took on Mapua in a game where the boys wanted to make a statement after their shock loss to The Stags last weekend, and what a response!

It took all of 4mins from kickoff for Tahuna to break the deadlock as a beauty of a pass from Sobi allowed Diego to beat the offside trap and go one on one with the keeper to put the lads 1-0 up.

Undeterred, Mapua came back and put the pressure on Tahuna. Some big challenges from Thorsten and Fraser on the flanks of the defense. But soon after Mapua were given a penalty for supposed shirt pulling. Mapua then buried the chance past Zachary Sommer. 1-1 with about 20mins on the clock. Tahuna pressed again with Sobi and Will pulling the strings in midfield. A quick change in tactic from Tahuna saw Sayha drift out to RW with Diego going ST and Dong slotting into CAM the latter making some neat touches and passes out Binh who was unlucky with a shot.

The game then turned on it's head as a 50/50 challenge between Kyle and the Mapua number 10, resulted in the ref giving another penalty to the visitors! Sobi visibly livid was held back by Kyle. The number 10 stepped up to take the penalty and what could be a sportsmanship of the year contender, passed the ball to Zach. The number 10 advised afterwards he felt it was a soft penalty and shouldn't have stood. Absolute Lad!

The half finished up 1-1 with Tahuna dominating the possession as they have done for much of their games this season.

Some oranges and wise words from Stu and Dancing for a Cause winner Rhys at the break and Tahuna took to the field with the aim of seeing the game off.

Tahuna had a flurry of chances in the first 5mins and then Will indicated he needed to come off so Quan was unleashed onto the field, instantly linking up with Sobi and Binh to put a scare into the Mapua team. 5 mins later and Sobi, the architect again, set Quan off in acres of space on the left with the young lad shooting from range, the keeper getting a finger to it but seeing it go into the back of the net. Screams of joy and limbs flying on the Tahuna sideline as the boys went 2-1 up.

Sobi then coming off for Ralph to a rapturous applause from the home support!

Mapua came back again but the Tahuna backline held firm, Eric and Kyle looking solid with Fraser and Thorsten marauding down the flanks. The former coming off from Bernie.

Some neat play from Quan and Binh then released Diego into space, the Brazilian then sucking in the Mapua keeper and flicking the ball out to Ralph to smash the ball with malice into the back of an empty net to make it 3-1.

Mapua again came back to try and close the deficit but Tahuna held strong. Kyle then made way for Matty as he was completely fried (bit of a step up from 4ths aye Kyle). Mapua then thought they had a chance but 2 rapid fire saves from Zachary Sommer kept the score at 3-1.

With 10mins to go Mapua threw everything they had against Tahuna who had decided to park the bus with 5 at the back. Bernie playing like a fresh faced 21 year old wouldn't let the Mapua winger past him, much to the shouts of "Muollo Muollo" from the Tahuna sideline.

The ref blew his whistle as Tahuna secured a well deserved win. Results elsewhere mean the boys head to play Loco Steamers next weekend with a 5 point cushion at the top of division 3.

TFC Breakers 1-1 GB Shield Maidens

Location: Takaka Rec grounds

Goals: Ruby

Match MVP: Emily

The Tahuna Breakers and Golden Bay played out a gripping 1-1 draw in a fiercely contested match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Both sides showcased grit, resilience, and flashes of brilliance in a game defined by early drama and a late equalizer.

The Breakers got off to a dream start, striking just two minutes after kickoff. Ruby, starting on the right wing, picked up a sharp pass and made a dazzling solo run, weaving through two defenders before calmly slotting the ball past the keeper. Her early goal set the tone for a high-energy first half, where the Breakers pushed forward despite being plagued by injuries.

With the goalie, Arin ruled out the night before due to a knee injury, EJ was called upon to guard the goal — and she rose to the occasion spectacularly. EJ pulled off multiple crucial saves throughout the match, keeping Golden Bay at bay until the final stretch. Her performance earned her the well-deserved title of Player of the Day.

Despite the Breakers' determination and defensive discipline, Golden Bay found a breakthrough in the last 10 minutes of the match. A sudden counterattack saw them capitalize on a tiered Breakers' team, scoring a run-away goal that evened them an equalizer, that brought a cheer from the local home crowd.

The match was physical but fair, with both teams showing exceptional sportsmanship. The relentless back-and-forth action, especially in the midfield battles, made for an enthralling spectacle. While the Breakers will rue the missed opportunity to secure a win after leading for most of the game, their perseverance in the face of adversity was commendable.

In the end, both teams walk away with a point — and the fans with a memorable contest that highlighted the spirit and skill of local football.

TFC Masters 1-2 Wakefield Masters

Location: Wakefield Domain

Goals: Garry

Match MVP: Stephen

Never mind the score, it was a bad day for the masters. We lost Daz early in the game with a snapped achilles. Our thoughts are with you Daz, hoping for a speedy recovery.

Well that didn't go so well, we didn't get out played, sure ! they were a very physical team and generally bigger than us. But I thought we gave as good as we got.

In the early minutes of the game I did a great impression of a seal flappin at some fish, another catch behind my head, dropped it, then dived on it before it went over the line. That put a few of you on edge.....my bad.

Anyway around 15 mins in they got a corner and one of their strikers stepped into a gap in the defense for an easy header 1-0. About 13/20 mins later they got another corner and their guy used the pace on the ball to flick it over me before I could react 2-0. There was one more chance in the half where they should have scored. I came out but ended up outside the 18 and couldn't handle the ball, he got round me and missed. Patty almost gave a penalty away putting his body in the way to stop a shot on the 18 after I finally cleared out a corner. We created chances too but didn't stick them away. So the half finished 2-0.

We were by no means out of the game and we kept them out for the second half. But unfortunately, we could only pull 1 goal back. Gaz smashed a volley into the top corner. So now we're out of the cup. But on the bright side that's probably a blessing with our depleting squad.

But big ups to the squad, we controlled a lot of that game and worked hard throughout the pitch. We did get a good few balls down the line ending with crosses and we had a lot of good passing sequences. Out of possession we kept a reasonable shape which probably stopped us getting rolled.
