Division 1:
Sprig + Fern Tahuna 1st XI
1st XI 2 - 1 Richmond
Location: Jubilee Park
Goals: Luc, Jepo
Match MVP: Van, Will
The beach boys travelled down SH6 to take on the red and black of Richmond on a cold, dewy night at Jubilee Park. Football under lights is always an enthralling prospect, made even better by the lingering smoke residue that fogged the pitch and gave the ground the sort of atmosphere usually reserved for football hooliganism documentaries set somewhere deep in Eastern Europe or South America.
The TFC lads made the trip still unbeaten and leading the pack, fresh off an impressive and hard-fought victory away in Blenheim just three days earlier. Having finally broken that particular curse, confidence was high and the group chat considerably chirpier. There were three changes from the side that stormed A&P Park. Gregor, now actively seeking a hamstring donor (if willing, please call 0800SAVETHESCOTS), made way for Adam, making his first-team debut after a well-earned call-up from the twos. Nick dropped to the bench, with Will returning to bolster the midfield and raise the park-wide risk of knee injuries to a level now formally classified as “almost certain.” The boys in blue also lined up with a recognised goalkeeper, as El Presidente returned between the sticks - with some rather large gloves to fill following Seth’s Herculean penalty save, which remains fresh in both memory and club folklore.
The game eventually got underway after a slight delay — much like this match report — after a combination of Will, James and Cunny corrected the goal positioning. Apparently “goal Tetris” is a favourite pre-match pastime for the good folk of Richmond. Tahuna started the sharper of the two sides, dominating possession early. The slick surface took both teams some time to adjust to, with heavy touches and turnovers becoming the unofficial theme of the opening exchanges. Despite controlling much of the ball, it was Richmond who fashioned the first real chance. Their ever-willing and frustratingly rapid number 9 broke free down the right channel and bore down on Will like a raging bull spotting red. Fortunately for us, Will is marginally sturdier than a piece of fabric and stood firm, deflecting the effort wide with a starfish-esque extension of his left leg.
A string of corners followed, but Tahuna eventually cleared their lines. Warning shots had been fired — and heard. The pattern of the first half was set: Tahuna controlling possession and probing for openings, Richmond sitting compact and looking to spring quickly on the counter. The final pass eluded TFC for much of the half, despite some sharp work down both flanks. Ethan, IT, Will and Cunny combined well to release Danny down the left, while Luc looked dangerous cutting in from the right. Our own mini Van dictated the tempo nicely as the boys pushed for the opener. It finally arrived when, somewhat ironically, Tahuna managed to connect that elusive final pass. The ball was worked neatly down the left before being recycled to Luc on the right. He cut inside, dropped the shoulder, bought himself a yard, and curled a lovely effort into the bottom corner five minutes before the break.
1-0 at oranges, though both sides probably felt there was more left in the tank. Nick entered the fray at halftime, with midfield enforcer Cunny making way as the shape was slightly rejigged. The second half began much like the first ended, with the boys in blue controlling possession, dictating play and creating threatening moments — though still struggling to find that final killer pass or finish. The game was levelled around the hour mark, ironically during arguably Tahuna’s strongest spell. Richmond launched a hopeful ball into the channel, somehow kept alive by their resident Speedy Gonzales in the number 9 shirt. His whipped cross was met by a ferocious volley from close range. The proximity to goal and sheer pace on the strike gave Will little chance, despite the valiant efforts of both his face and cap (I knew there was a reason he wore a cap at night). To rub salt firmly into the wound, the “ferocious volley” came courtesy of our resident retiree, James, who had finally connected cleanly with something other than an opponent’s shin. Unfortunately, this time it happened to be the ball — and unfortunately for all involved, it ended up in our net. 1-1, with half an hour to play.
The goal rattled the boys somewhat, and without the infamous waft of KFC to summon the usual second wind, they struggled to settle and reassert control. Richmond continued to threaten on the break as the match descended into a scrappy, niggly affair. A series of fouls eventually presented Tahuna with a free kick just outside the Richmond box. Having already produced a few earlier efforts that had done little more than tenderise the defensive wall, Jepo lined one up again. In his mind, he pictured the ball whipping majestically into the far top corner. In reality, a slightly mis-hit effort dipped awkwardly, while clever runs from Adam and Mark obscured the keeper’s view just enough for it to bounce apologetically into the net. Hardly Beckham. Barely even Beckham’s mistress. But they all count. The boys in blue had now found the net three times and, crucially, led 2-1.
The final 20 minutes brought more scrap, broken play, and increasingly tired bodies as both sides wilted under the thickening smog generated by the TFC ultras on the sideline - wrapped in blankets and providing all the menace of an aggressive retirement village. Tahuna held firm, taking all three points back to KFC Park to finish the first round top of the tree and still unbeaten.
Player of the Day honours were shared across midfield duo of Will and Van, as well as Jepo, who sportingly accepted the complimentary beverage on offer - largely because a Coke comes in noticeably cheaper than a beer. Time now to regroup, re-tape, ice bath, lather in Deep Heat and prepare for the visit of the only side we’ve yet to beat, Suburbs Reserves, back at 3PT Park on Saturday. Match report by Jepo
